And summer makes a triumphant return! Hoorah! There is so much to be looking forward to for the next three months. I’m predicting The Bronx’s show at the Corner Hotel on December 12 will be an idyllic start to a long, boozy summer which will be concluded ceremoniously with Soundwave festival in February. This weekend I’m seeing Kanye West do his thang at Rod Laver and hoping that this outrageously boastful young man lives up to his wild reputation. I’ve started deliberately ignoring his presence in the media, highly stylised press shots and controversial pull quotes, in particular. Could this guy run his mouth any more? Someone needs to tell West to shut his word hole and let his wickedly successful music do the talking. I’m trying to ignore him because I’ve found that an artist’s personality will directly influence my appreciation of their product. For example, finding out that your favourite singer is a moody butthole really detracts from a live show: where you would usually revel in their genius, you now take a decidedly cynical stance. Where their words were once inspiring and talents, unquestionable, you’re now mistaking their terrific stage presence for cockiness and bravado. If you believe their true selves to be in contrast with their message, their entire works come into disrepute. Unless, you’re Henry Rollins or Chris Hannah and happily delight in being an asshole on and off the stage. Speaking of Propagandhi, will someone please confirm or deny the tour already!?!
