Punk. Gargh!!! I hate the term and completely and totally believe that it’s best avoided at all costs. I think I’d be all for the concept of completely removing the word for the English language altogether. Firstly because I truly believe that it’s a word that has become completely redundant within the current music climate. Whereas it used to cover a stream of fresh new bands several decades ago, the genre itself has since given birth to an entire litter of creepy offspring, each cleverly mixing and matching different elements of the style. Secondly, the attitudes people now have towards the word are simply nauseating. And it’s not like previous generations where our elders and other misinformed members of society are judging our taste in music. This time it’s the people within the scene that are souring it. Those that consider themselves upstanding, ultimate representations of the word ‘punk’. The people that vehemently base their self-image and musical tastes around their finely honed concept of punk and then shit on people that have differing opinions on the idea or sound. As though this term that’s been so damn contentious since its inception has now found its ultimate embodiment in themselves. It’s disappointing to be so enamoured with music that’s social scene is so pompous and unsupportive of it’s peers. The next person who dares utter the phrase, ‘that’s not real punk’, needs to be immediately rushed upon and disembowelled in a slow, torturous fashion.

There's no point in beating a dead horse. In view of the original aesthetic 'punk' has been dead for decades. However, it's bastard children still live grow and breed in the _noncommercial & anti-capitalist_ underground of squats and proletarian cooperatives. And money soaked modern alternative-pop still doesn't have anything to do with it. Death to all manifestations of capitalist recuperation! Long live authentic proletarian cultural subversion!

Em, I love that you used the word "disembowelled". But seriously, bravo. Punk purists or music purists in general are not exactly some of my favorite people but unfortunately they do exist. I admittedly use "punk rock" as a blanket statement in general for all this stuff we're involved in but that's where it ends. I try and avoid people who base their lives around the phrase too. I don't know where I'm going with this... just wanted to say, nice post. Keep it up girl!
