You know those times when you discover a band, sweltering in the crowded, convoluted pits of Myspace, trying to make a name for themselves and you realise they’re super awesome and inordinate amounts of excitement ensue? Not much beats that feeling. It’s like you’re privy to something special when you understand the sheer awesomeness of a band very early in their career.
Well conversely, there’s something to be said for being so far behind the times that you’re super stoked about a new band and their incredible sound until you realise said band has been cranking out material for almost 17 years. Erm…oops. Case in point: Smoking Popes. Where the fuck have these guys been all my life? Comprised of three brothers, Matt, Josh and Eli Caterer, The Smoking Pops are from Chicago and they formed in 1991. They boast the crooner vocal stylings of John K Sampson with smatterings of geeky Weezer-style pop. They released their fourth studio album, and their first release in 11 years this August. It’s called Stay Down and if you know what’s good fer ya, you might mosey onto iTunes and purchase it. See also Myspace.com/smokingpopes.
While I’m flirting with this vague sense of self-importance, may I also suggest investigating the following bands who pleasure my musical endorphins like 1000 Tickle Me Elmos spasming inside my ear drums:
