Having ventured from London, to Amsterdam, to Paris and then making the long haul to Venice. I’ve finally arrived in none other than Prague for some downtime with a dear friend. In other words, giving me ample time to scour the interweb for new music and videos etc. I ran across an old email from a friend, which had a youtube link within.
The video was an excerpt from a Paramore live performance. It was only 30 seconds long, but it was also painfully apparent that they were indeed covering…wait for it…. One Armed Scissor. Yes. And not that you tube comments should even be observed, let alone referred to with any air of credibility in another public forum but you should’ve seen the shitstorm that ensued.
‘ATDI elistists’ were lambasting the bright young band for daring to cover what is essentially a cult classic, and Paramore fans were getting their knickers in a right knot defending a band’s right to cover whatever they want. Admittedly, though the latter have a sound point, I can’t help but fall into the former group who shuddered just a tad upon viewing said video. I guess my qualm is not with Paramore having the ‘nerve’ to cover such an amazing song as they are entitled to, but rather it’s disquieting to think that Paramore thought themselves capable of standing up to inevitable comparisons. It’s simply easier to leave these classics in the safe grasp of their creators, so their goodness can be preserved.
