Just when I thought I'd narrowed my list of Top 5 releases of the year down to a privileged few, Motion City Soundtrack go and stuff it all up. Seriously. The list was modified and revisited and then cemented in a manner that would satisfy the most obsessive Rob Gordon-types, but then that dude with the crazy hair opened his yapper to produce the finest pop voices this side of Darryl Palumbo and shot Motion City Soundtrack's Even If It Kills Me in to skittle them all.
I'm pleased to announce the band's third full length is perfect spring-time soundtrack material, so crazy cheesy its best accompanied with a sunny day, a car full of mates, an esky and the windows cracked just enough that the wind licks your fringe. Seriously. Slow motion exchanging of affectionate smiles and all. This album could not get any more cliché coca cola ad and its all the more awesome for it.
I suddenly found myself desperately hoping Motion City would completely explode into ridiculous Fall-Out-Boy levels of stardom, as they're clearly deserving, and a couple of the dudes in the band appear in need of some hardcore groupie love. But then, that kind of OMGTRL!!1! exposure can really kick your appreciation of a band in the crotch- as it inevitably leads to those self-righteous moments everyone experiences when the broader population suddenly discovers a deep love for the band you've been worshipping for many moons.
However, I'm handing this one over to the music gods. Should they see fit to bless Motion City with a fanbase largely consisting of Supre shoppers on whom the beautiful irony of Pierre's melancholy' lyrics are completely lost, then so be it. May they go forth and prosper.
