Last Friday I sacrificed my freshly washed locks to the thick ciggy stench of The Tote, ready to witness Irrelevant for the first time since they supported Death By Stereo at the Arty in what was unequivocally the best gig of 2006.
Supports Chase Manhattan were noticeably absent at what was proclaimed to be their final gig ever, but MDK filled their shoes nicely albeit somewhat nervously.
Despite obvious sound issues, Amity Affliction teased the crowd with the most alluring 10-minute set I’ve witnessed (may or may not be because the band is strangely attractive / have way better hair than me) before cutting their set drastically short due to singer, Joel’s obvious heath issues.
Irrelevant, though seemingly lacking distinct harmonies of previous shows, exhibited captivating endurance and the usual crispy hardcore riffs we all know and love.
On another note what the fuck happened to Good Charlotte? Not that there was any substance in their previous efforts, but golly, Video Hits introduced me to the musical extravaganza that is ‘Keep Your Hand Off My Girl’ on Sunday morning.
It may have been the excessive alcohol consumption from the night prior, but there was some definite nausea apparent at mere sight of Benji and Joel Thingywatsit’s cliché ink, hardcore pouts and painful, ball-tearing falsetto. That, my friends, is the most horrid abuse of moderate success and subsequent fame I’ve ever had the misfortune of enduring.
Boys, those poppy, faux-hawk outcast loser anthems really worked for you. Hell ‘Little Things’ was mildly tolerable. Your delight at sudden financial gain and consequent twiggy ‘It Girls’ that that affords you does not entitle you to try your hand at tuneless wannabe ghetto Joy Division monotone bollocks.
‘Lifestyles Of The Rich and Famous’, indeed.
